What Is Polyvagal Therapy? (In Plain English)
What is Polyvagal Therapy in plain terms?
Your nervous system runs in three states: safety, fight-or-flight, and shutdown. Most people with anxiety or trauma spend too much time in the last two, cued by old data. Polyvagal Therapy gives you language to name the state you're in and tools to help your system find its way back to safety.
Polyvagal Therapy sounds like something you'd need a neuroscience degree to understand. You don't. And once you get the basics, a lot of things about yourself that probably felt confusing or frustrating will start to make a lot more sense.
Your nervous system has three gears
Your autonomic nervous system, the part of your nervous system that runs automatically without you thinking about it, operates in three basic states. Think of them as gears.
The first is safety. When your nervous system reads your environment as safe, you're in this gear. You can think clearly, connect with other people, feel present, handle challenges without falling apart. This is where you do your best living.
The second is fight or flight. When your nervous system detects a threat, it mobilizes. Heart rate goes up, breathing speeds up, stress hormones flood your system. You're geared up to respond to danger. This is useful when there's actual danger. It's exhausting and disruptive when it's running all the time in response to a stressful email or a difficult conversation.
The third is shutdown. When the threat feels overwhelming and fight or flight hasn't worked, your nervous system hits the brakes hard. You go numb, dissociate, check out, can't feel much of anything. This is your body's last resort protection mechanism.
The problem most people don't know they have
Most people with anxiety, trauma histories, or high-stress lives are spending way too much time in gear two and sometimes gear three, and not enough time in gear one. And because it's been that way for so long, it feels normal. You don't even realize your nervous system has a different gear available.
The other problem is that your nervous system is making these gear shifts based on cues it learned a long time ago. A tone of voice that sounds like a parent who wasn't safe. A facial expression that reads as disapproval. A situation that pattern-matches to something overwhelming from your past. Your nervous system is scanning constantly, and it's using old data.
What Polyvagal Therapy gives you
Two things: language and tools.
Language, because being able to name what state you're in changes your relationship to it. "I'm not losing my mind, my nervous system just shifted into fight or flight" is a different experience than "what is wrong with me."
Tools, because once you understand what's happening and why, you can learn to influence it. Not control it with brute force, but actually work with your nervous system to help it find its way back to safety more reliably. That's a skill that changes everything.
This is core to the work we do at Rising Hope. Your nervous system isn't broken. It's working exactly as it was designed to. We just need to give it some updated information.
